Ms. Walz assisted the City of Allen, Texas by conducting a City Council Development Character Workshop and follow-up policy session soon after the City hired a new City Manager. These sessions were designed as a forum for City Council and staff discussion about large lot development, new urbanism and related community development patterns. They resulted in agreement on direction for a new downtown Master Plan, zoning ordinance revisions and related policy research.
Ms. Walz again conducted strategic planning sessions for the City of Allen in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. She led a City Council Strategic Planning Session for the City of Allen in February 2006. The session defined overall goals for the year, with a special emphasis on economic development. For Allen’s 2007 strategic planning process, Ms. Walz conducted the first strategic planning workshop for the City’s senior management staff as well as a City Council Strategic Planning Session. This session included a special focus on water issues and an update of the city’s overall goals for 2007. For the 2008 strategic planning process, Ms. Walz conducted a strategic planning session for senior management staff and a City Council strategic planning session. Both sessions included the use of book synopsis presentations, small group discussions and keypad polling of participants. They resulted in an updated set of goals for the City for 2008. The strategic planning sessions for senior staff and City Council for the 2009 Strategic Plan update used a world café format and electronic keypad polling, among other techniques, to focus discussion on the issues of greatest importance in the economic downturn. Ms. Walz conducted staff and City Council sessions for the 2010 Strategic Plan update with a focus on emerging issues and the use of video presentations to expand the ideas under discussion. The 2011 Strategic Plan discussions focused on issues related to sustainability and opportunities for increased efficiency through shared services.
