Last year our newsletter was full of pictures of the major construction and renovation underway at the KT Ranch in Portal, Arizona. It turned out that a lot of 2023 was spent on construction and improvements too. But as we end the year, we are happy to say that just about everything is done (knock on wood!). So it’s ready for you to visit!
Here is a short summary of the work this year. Most of the renovations on the existing house were completed in 2022, as were the major components of the new Zither House and courtyard. But there were important improvements to Zither this year, finished through great work by Byrd Construction’s crews:
The bathroom is now complete, with lightingTerry is enjoying his new space for creative work! Karen’s space is the same, with the same wonderful view.
There was a lot to finish in the Zither courtyard.
The gate into the courtyard from the driveway now blends in and locks.Plantings, a fountain, fire table and chairs are ready to enjoy! The ‘commons’ between the two buildings now has raised planting beds, an outdoor kitchen and dining areaPathway lighting leads back to the houses. The swallows like the string lights in the outdoor kitchen/dining area as much as we do!Chain-link fencing means the javelinas can’t tear up the plants and other features in the commons.Southwest Desert Images (SDI) did a great job on the plantings. Even with a hot August and September, no monsoon rain, and then the chilly fall weather, the plants are still thriving. The pond had to be drained completely. Heavy rains in January delayed the work. Finally, Donovan (from Southwest Desert Images) began the earthwork, under the direction of Paul, The Pond Gnome. The Pond Gnome’s crew then reshaped the pond and installed a giant impermeable liner held down by boulders. Eventually we began refilling from the well. Finally, Arizona Game and Fish returned our endangered topminnows! (These fish were native to ponds in this valley but nearly went extinct due to ranching practices. We’re helping reintroduce them.)SDI added some new trees on the berm after the pond restoration. You can see the wildlife are enjoying it!Then, just when we thought we were done … we asked Bunch (from Elbrock Water) to check on an issue with the windmill. His investigations discovered a hole in the well casing, worn rods and other problems that have reduced water flow and increased the amount of dirt clogging the filters. This project will continue into 2024.
But is it worth it???
Here are some scenes from early mornings and evenings this year. When we see these, we feel like it is. Come visit and see what you think!
