Project Description
Chapter Strategic Planning
Strategic Community Solutions has conducted many strategic planning sessions for the American Planning Association, Texas Chapter, the professional organization for the state’s planners. The first of these workshops was held in June 2008. The workshops bring together long-time organizational leaders and recently-elected leaders; they enable the group to draft a vision and an updated set of action priorities that directs staff and volunteers for the two-year period of each Chapter President’s tenure.
The process typically begins in the spring with discussions between Karen Walz, the APA Texas President, APA Texas President-Elect and the Chapter’s Executive Administrator. Next, SCS conducts an online survey of the entire APA Texas membership to gain an understanding of members’ views on the past two years and the issues facing APA Texas and Texas communities during the next two years. SCS designs and facilitates an action plan retreat for the Board of Directors. Along with a general discussion of the action items to achieve each goal, Board members also participated in interactive sessions focused key topics identified through the member survey. The retreat provides direction for drafting a new Action Plan. This draft is reviewed by the Executive Committee and adopted by the Board of Directors.
These strategic planning sessions, and two-year Strategic Plans, have been managed by SCS every two years for most of the years since 2008. The most recent Plan was adopted by the Board in November 2023.
