2023 Year in Review

Best Wishes for a Wonderful 2024!

Happy Holidays! We hope that 2023 has been a good year for you and that you’re looking forward to an even better 2024. The sections below share stories and photos about things we’ve enjoyed this year.

As we said last year, Karen inherited a love of photography from her grandmother Melba Pankratz Regier, who took many pictures throughout her long life. So you’ll find plenty of photos in the stories below. The photos were taken by one of us (usually Karen but sometimes Terry) unless otherwise noted.

Our hope is that, for those of you who are very interested in a topic (say, current conditions in Cuba), you’ll find the different views and the details interesting and satisfying. You can click on an individual image to see it full screen. For those who aren’t as interested, we hope you will enjoy the tapestry of images as you scroll through. Or skip the stories altogether if you prefer.

In any case, we send our best wishes to you for a wonderful 2024 and we hope to see you some time during the year. Enjoy!

“Carpe Diem” was the name of an oceanfront lodge where we stayed in Angola. It’s Latin for “seize the day”. That is the lesson we learned from our experiences in 2023.

In several countries we visited, human activity had destroyed forests and grasslands that had been important habitat when our guides visited a year or two ago. This summer was the hottest on record in Bolivia (as in many other places) and there is continuing drought. So when we visited – at a time when birds should be singing to establish territories and catching food to feed their young – many species were silent and seem to have simply skipped nesting for this year. Political changes have placed some countries off limits too, and have created difficulties like fuel shortages and protests in Angola. Though we’ve been fortunate to have only minor health concerns, friends have had bigger challenges, and an acquaintance with a promising future as an international birding guide died unexpectedly – at age 35.

All these experiences tell us not to assume that people, places or experiences will wait until any of us get around to them. If there are things you want to do, or people you want to spend time with, or places you want to see … don’t wait! Go!

Saving Terra

  • On December 11, 2023
Terry’s principal project this year was the launch and development of his Substack Saving Terra. The media platform is dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity, with emphasis on bird conservation. As an international birder, he has grown increasingly concerned over the many threats to forests and savannas in tropical regions. For most countries he visits, […]

KT Ranch Transformation

  • On December 9, 2023
Last year our newsletter was full of pictures of the major construction and renovation underway at the KT Ranch in Portal, Arizona. It turned out that a lot of 2023 was spent on construction and improvements too. But as we end the year, we are happy to say that just about everything is done (knock […]

Fun with Family and Friends

  • On December 8, 2023
We began the year celebrating holidays with family, and expected to end it the same way. In between, we’ve been really fortunate to share this year with our family members and dear friends, in person or otherwise. It would be impossible to describe all the interesting experiences, in-depth conversations and good times we had, but […]

People Who Made This Year Special

  • On December 7, 2023
One of the wonderful things about traveling is the people who share your experiences. Some of these are really essential to those experiences – like the people who guide our tours and the others who get us to the places we visit. This year we were very lucky to travel with some great folks! Here […]

Southwest and Highlands Costa Rica

  • On December 6, 2023
In January, Terry kicked off his birding year with long-time buddy Jim Arneson in Costa Rica after an absence of nearly 30 years.  After meeting guide Jorge Campos in San Jose CR, the pair headed for the Pacific coast, ending up at the exquisite Esquinas Rainforest Lodge in southwestern Costa Rica.  This area of tropical […]

Oaxaca Highlights

  • On December 5, 2023
Terry and I enjoyed a fun trip to Oaxaca this past March. We traveled with our good friend Dan Williams (Barbara Williams had to stay home with COVID). We had two great guides — Jorge Montejo Diaz and Amy McAndrews. Our route is shown in the map below (Oaxaca is star #5). The mountains around […]

Captivating Cuba

  • On December 4, 2023
We finally made it to Cuba this year! This is a trip we’d wanted to do for a long time. We went in late March with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours (VENT), largely because the guide was David Ascanio, who we’d met at Panama’s Canopy Tower back in 2003. It was a short, 11-day trip packed […]

Adventure in Angola

  • On December 3, 2023
In May, we traveled to a place that many people haven’t heard about, much less visited — Angola. Here’s the story of why and what we found there. And for more on Angola’s biodiversity, check out the article on Terry’s “Saving Terra” substack! Where – and What – is Angola? As you see on the […]

A Brief Introduction to Portugal

  • On December 2, 2023
It’s not simple to travel to Angola. We knew there would have to be an intermediate stop. It turns out that even today, Angola’s colonial history still places its hand on the scale. The best flights to Angola are through Lisbon, the capital of its former colonial power. Since we had heard from many different […]

Bolivia from the Andes to the Amazon

  • On December 1, 2023
Our final foreign trip for this year was to Bolivia. It’s a country with great habitat and cultural diversity. We saw and learned a lot, even though there were many other things we didn’t have time to explore. Our guide was a friend we’ve traveled with before, Emiliano Garcia Loyola (nicknamed Indio), with Sereima Tours. […]
